Enmity

What does enmity mean as used in the scriptures and as used by other church leaders

President Ezra Taft Benson in a conference talk on pride taught: “Enmity means ‘hatred toward, hostility to, or a state of opposition" It is the power by which Satan wishes to reign over us.  Ensign, May 1989, 4    He further said,  "The central feature of pride is enmity—enmity toward God and enmity toward our fellowmen. Enmity means “hatred toward, hostility to, or a state of opposition.”

"Our enmity toward God takes on many labels, such as rebellion, hard-heartedness, stiff-neckedness, unrepentant, puffed up, easily offended, and sign seekers. The proud wish God would agree with them. They aren’t interested in changing their opinions to agree with God’s.  Another major portion of this very prevalent sin of pride is enmity toward our fellowmen. We are tempted daily to elevate ourselves above others and diminish them."

Moses 4:21 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, between thy seed and her seed; and he shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

'When the Lord placed enmity between Eve’s children and the devil, Satan was told that he would bruise the heel of Eve’s seed, but her seed would bruise his head. (See Moses 4:21.) President Joseph Fielding Smith explained that “the ‘God of peace,’ who according to the scriptures is to bruise Satan, is Jesus Christ.” (Answers to Gospel Questions, Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1957, 1:3.) Satan would bruise the Savior’s heel by leading men to crucify Him. But through his death and resurrection, Christ overcame death for all of us; and through his atonement, he offers each of us a way to escape the eternal ramifications of sin. Thus, Satan’s machinations have been frustrated and eventually he will be judged, bound, and cast into hell forever."

There are many references of "enmity" when searched on church website, but are quoting several of our church leaders.  In a sense they are quoting each other.  In addition enmity as mentioned above and is used in the following scriptures:

Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God       James 4:4

And in that day the enmity of man, and the enmity of beasts, yea, the enmity of all flesh, shall cease from before my face.    Doctrine and Covenants 101:26

And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:     Ephesians 2:16

And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.   Luke 23:12 

Or in enmity smite him with his hand, that he die: he that smote him shall surely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the revenger of blood shall slay the murderer, when he meeteth him. But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or have cast upon him any thing without laying of wait,     Numbers 35:21-22

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.   Romans 8:7
